Loyola's mission statement highlights having God present in all that we do and that service and humanity are not mutual exclusive. The Engaged Learning program at Loyola draws upon this mission to bring opportunities to students that bring together service and faith. It also promotes integrating the internship or engaged learning course with other academic courses and other engagements.
I chose my internship at Fabbrini Law Group with this in mind. As someone who is aiming to enter the legal profession, I am hoping to surround myself with leaders that embody this same message. My mentors at Fabbrini brought community and warmth into private practice. While many struggle to see the service aspect of working in a private firm, I saw it as an opportunity that utilized Loyola's mission in a unique way. Lawyers are meant to help those in a time of greatest need: they serve as the translators of the legal process for those who have to experience it and have found their rights in jeopardy. Lawyers work hard to preserve the rights of individuals wronged by the law or other people.
In personal injury, lawyers defend individuals who have been wronged by other individuals. Civil procedure allows for people to fight for themselves when their rights have been violated in some way. In criminal defense, attorneys work hard to defend individuals who found themselves on the wrong side of a flawed justice system. Working in an environment like this inspired me to be someone who makes change no matter what field I end up in. In reality, faith and change can come in all different ways, shapes, and forms.
